ATR-Clear and Present Danger

by special guest blogger Suddenly ATR

It was rainy, 5:30 in the morning, cold, and I was headed for my new weekly assignment. I don't have a car so the commute to this new school is over an hour and a half and they start soon after 7 in the morning.

Two subway and bus transfers later, I finally arrived at the school. I was immediately given my coverage assignments and then sent to talk to the AP. Her first question shocked me:

"Have you ever been brought up on disciplinary charges for ... Hitting a child?"

I was shocked. Of course not!

"Well that was an issue last year with an ATR," she explained.

I reiterated to her that I don't hit kids. She then told me I was not to teach my own lessons during coverages, because again, there were ATR's last year who showed the kids inappropriate stuff. I assured her that I don't show kids inappropriate pictures or videos.

The kids at the school were fairly nice, by the end of the week they were saying hi to me in the halls and chatting with me when I did cafeteria duty. It almost made up for the marathon commute and the fact that I was covering six or seven periods a day.

But just as soon as it began, it was over. The principal chatted with me for a few minutes. "We have a nice school don't we?"

I nodded in agreement.

"Well, uh, thanks for helping out" he said.
